Chapter Seven
The thought of taking you to bed every night certainly appeals to me.
Jodie bit her lip, trying to concentrate on the scenery going by outside the Jeep. She wanted to think of anything but Donovanâs provocative statement. She ought to be annoyed with such a sexist statement, but it was hard to be angry with that kind of sensuous approval.
After what seemed like an eternity, Donovan pulled to a stop by the Carneysâ house and flexed his fingers on the steering wheel. He didnât make a move to get out, and Jodie was equally uncertain what to do.
It seemed as though more should be said, but what?
There wasnât any manual on etiquette for mail-order marriages. And even if there was, how many women found themselves attracted to the brother of their groom-to-be?
âI guess weâre agreed we should spend as little time together as possible,â Jodie murmured finally.
âWeâre agreed.â
She sneaked a look at Donovanâs profile, wondering if he felt as grim as he sounded. âOkay.â
All at once he turned toward her, an angry expression on his face. âOut of purely egotistical curiosity, why are you so certain weâre incompatible? Itâs more than our difference of opinion about marriage, isnât it?â
Jodie swallowed. She couldnât explain without admitting that he disturbed her too much, that he was too much like a man she could love. If sheâd met him as a girl, before falling in love with Mark Richards and being widowed, she would have chased after Donovan Masters with all the intensity a fearless teenager could muster.
But not now.
Now she knew what it was like to fall in love, only to get her heart smashed into tiny little pieces.
Still, she stole another glance at Donovanâs tense face and searched for words that would satisfy him without revealing the truth. She didnât want him misunderstanding things, the way sheâd misunderstood. If their signals hadnât gotten crossed, they wouldnât have kissed and nearly made love. If they slipped again it might be a disaster.
âWell?â he demanded.
âTo be honest, youâre too much like my first husband.â
âIâm what?â Donovan looked at Jodie, astonished. It was the last thing heâd expected to hear. Sure, he knew he was a pilot, too, but that was only superficial. âYou canât be serious.â
She pushed her hair back with her fingers and shrugged. âThere are some similarities.â
Donovan was certain there was more to Jodieâs explanation, and he suddenly knew that he didnât need to hear it. He already knew too much.
He knew Jodie smelled like an angel and kissed like a goddess. He knew her body was soft and sweetly rounded, and so responsive, he wouldnât be able to sleep remembering it.
Hell, for that matter he might never sleep again.
A woman had never turned him on quicker and harder. Donovan wanted to believe it was because she was unattainable. Safe. If theyâd met under any other circumstances he would have promptly high-tailed it away, because she was the permanent sort of woman heâd always avoided.
Only, Donovan couldnât deny he would have been too curious about Jodie to stay away.
